6 Foods That Reverse Aging

As the wisdom of the four corners of the world  begins to condense into the information mecca that we know as the internet, do we now know the foods that are able to reverse aging? The common answer appears to be, somewhat convincingly, yes. We are now in a position to choose from different foods from around the world and cultivate a diet that reverses aging. The term is admittedly something of a misnomer – we can never reverse aging, but we can slow the unalterable slide of old age, look more youthful, and feel better than ever.

The complexity of this question is perhaps more nuanced than the length of one post. The nutrition industry is still relatively new and the science behind the foods is still somewhat open to debate. However, there are several main foods or food groups that will help your skin look 5 or 10 years less than your age.

So what are they?

1. Blueberries

Not called a super food without a reason, Blueberries are definitely one of the foods to reverse the aging process. High in anti-oxidants, nutrients and low in calories, Blueberries are a great food to include in your daily or weekly eating. Although not absolutely conclusive, there was some research done in 2012 that from a sample of 93,000 women, those who ate three or more portions per week had a 32% lower risk of heart attack compared to those who only ate one portion. In fact, the whole berry category – strawberries, raspberries, cranberries, etc – all have hugely beneficial properties.

2. Olive Oil

The second piece of advice is to live like you’re in the Mediterranean. There is a reason why people from this region live to such a ripe old age. On behalf of Italy, cook and drizzle with high quality Olive Oil. This tasty and famous oil has an abundant amount of beneficial properties. Use it, generously.

3. Garlic

A slightly less orthodox recommendation is to eat lots of garlic. It’s a natural way to boost your immune system and has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries. The Italians use garlic is almost everything and reap the benefits.

4. Greek Yogurt

From Greece, the wonderful Greek Yogurt. Unlike other yogurt, Greek yogurt has been strained to remove the whey and thus possesses almost double the protein serving compared to normal yogurt. Additionally, this removal of the whey reduces sugar and sodium by around 40%.

5. Fish oil

By no means restricted to the Mediterranean but certainly a big influence there, a great anti aging food is fish. The oiler fish like mackerel or sardines are particularly good but almost all fish have properties to make you look and feel fantastic! Where you live in the world will depend on what you can get but make sure you eat it fresh.

6. Red Wine

And now to some of the things that might be more welcome to the majority of readers! Firstly, there are many wonderful properties in wine, particularly red wine. Red wine has less calories than white but it shares all the anti-oxidant qualities that make your body run efficiently. There have been some studies done that a glass of red wine a day is better than going to the gym. I’ll leave you to read further on that one! Finally, finish a meal with a piece or two of dark chocolate. Dark chocolate can lower your blood pressure and improve the flow of blood in your body. Melt it and dip some strawberries in. Delicious!

Are there foods that can encourage the aging process? Without doubt, there are definitely some foods to accelerate the process. Greasy foods, particularly those with a high starch content, make visible changes to the skin and are difficult to digest for most people. Eating foods like these slow the metabolism and is one of the primary reasons for weight gain.

Should you stop going to the bakery and picking up your favourite pastries then? Definitely not. Life simply wouldn’t be enjoyable or realistic without the odd indulgence! Set within the frame of a sensible approach towards eating (with plenty of the above items!), there is no problem at all with the odd cream cake. Healthy eating is a lifestyle, not a punishment, after all.
